Nuki unveils the Keypad 2 NFC with Aliro support for contactless unlocking of Matter-enabled smart locks.
Smart lock manufacturer Nuki has unveiled its latest innovation, the Keypad 2 NFC, an accessory designed to enhance convenience and security for smart door lock users. By incorporating Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, the new device allows users to unlock their doors effortlessly by holding a compatible smartphone or smartwatch near the keypad.
The Keypad 2 NFC supports tap-to-unlock functionality, enabling seamless access when paired with a Matter-enabled Nuki Smart Lock, a compatible Matter hub, and supported devices such as Apple HomeKey or Samsung Digital Home Key. For those without Matter integration, the keypad offers an alternative ‘Nuki app mode’, allowing direct NFC-based unlocking for users with NFC-enabled smartphones and 4th or 5th-generation Nuki Smart Locks. Notably, this mode does not require an additional hub for operation.
The Keypad 2 NFC supports five access methods: digital home keys, tap-to-unlock via app mode, fingerprint recognition, and personalized entry codes. The device can store up to 20 fingerprints, 35 tap-to-unlock credentials, and 200 access codes, making it suitable for a variety of scenarios. According to Nuki, "all access events are protected by end-to-end encryption", with user data stored locally by default. For those seeking additional flexibility, optional cloud connectivity is also available.
Installation of the Keypad 2 NFC is simple, requiring no wiring. The device can be mounted using adhesive strips or screws, and it boasts an IP54 rating, ensuring resistance to dust and moisture. Additionally, the keypad and lock are not permanently connected, a design choice aimed at reducing power consumption. Nuki states that the keypad operates for approximately twelve months on battery power before a replacement is necessary.
The release of the Keypad 2 NFC aligns with recent advancements in smart home interoperability standards. Matter, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, promotes compatibility across devices from various manufacturers. Complementing this, the Aliro specification ensures secure communication between smart locks and personal devices like smartphones and wearables. Nuki highlights that the Keypad 2 NFC is the first keypad for residential electronic door locks to achieve Aliro certification.
The Keypad 2 NFC is currently available through Nuki’s online store and select regional Amazon platforms, with a recommended retail price of €179. Existing customers interested in upgrading their systems can find additional information on the company’s website.
With its sleek design, advanced features, and compatibility with leading smart home standards, the Keypad 2 NFC represents a significant addition to Nuki’s smart lock ecosystem, catering to both new and existing users seeking enhanced security and convenience.
